AVIDR Privacy Policy
Effective date: 20 October 2026
AVIDR (“we”, “us”) is a reading app for iPhone. This policy explains what AVIDR collects, why, and what you can do about it. Questions: support@avidr.app.
The short version
- Your books stay on your device. We never upload your book files. Read-aloud runs on your iPhone.
- You don’t need an account. Without one, nothing you read, highlight or save leaves your device, apart from the anonymous diagnostics described below.
- If you create an account and turn on sync, we store your reading data so it can appear on your other devices. We don’t sell it, and we don’t use it for advertising.
- We don’t track you across other apps or websites, and AVIDR shows no ads.
1. What stays on your device
These are stored only on your device, unless you turn on sync (section 3):
- books you import, and their covers;
- highlights, notes and bookmarks;
- saved words and your review history;
- reading progress and reading statistics.
Read-aloud. The voices run on your device, and the text of your books is never sent to us to be read aloud.
The listening log. It stays on your device. It leaves only if you choose to share it, for example in a support email. It records voice timings and book titles, not book text.
Translation. Uses Apple’s Translation framework, which runs on your device after a language is downloaded. Apple’s privacy policy covers language downloads.
2. Voice downloads
The studio voices are downloaded once from our storage server (storage.akit.dev) or, as a fallback, from Hugging Face. These servers see your IP address and the files requested, as any web server does. Our server keeps these access logs for up to 30 days to keep the service running and secure.
3. Account and sync (optional)
Signing in. You can sign in with Apple, Google or email. We then store:
- your email address (with Sign in with Apple, this can be Apple’s private relay address);
- your name, if your provider shares it;
- an account identifier.
Syncing. If you sign in and sync is on, we store the following on our servers, so your devices show the same library:
- book details: title, author, a fingerprint of the file, and your reading position and status;
- highlights, notes and bookmarks;
- saved words, with the sentence you saved them from;
- review history;
- reading sessions (when and for how long you read).
Book files are never uploaded.
Where and how long. Sync data is stored on a server we rent in the United Kingdom. We keep it while your account exists. When you delete your account in the app (Settings → Account → Delete Account), we delete your sync data after a short grace period of 30 days, during which you can cancel the deletion.
4. Google Drive (optional)
If you connect Google Drive, AVIDR uses Google’s permission to list and download your book files to your device, and to keep PDF annotations in step with Drive. The access tokens are stored in your device’s Keychain. Your files go straight from Google to your device; they don’t pass through our servers. You can disconnect at any time in Settings.
AVIDR’s use of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
5. Purchases
Apple processes all payments; we never see your payment details. We use RevenueCat to manage subscriptions. When you buy or restore AVIDR Pro, RevenueCat receives your purchase history from Apple and an anonymous app user ID. If you have an account, that ID is your account ID. This lets your Pro follow you to your other devices. RevenueCat’s privacy policy is at https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy.
5a. Word lookups and translation
On iOS 18 and later, translation first uses Apple’s on-device translation, so the text stays on your iPhone. External services are used in two cases:
- Translation: on iOS 17, or when Apple’s translation has no result, the word or passage you selected is sent to MyMemory (translated.net).
- Definitions: every single English word you look up is sent to the Free Dictionary API (dictionaryapi.dev).
Only the selected text and the language pair are sent: no account, no book title. These services may keep requests under their own policies: MyMemory and Free Dictionary API.
6. Diagnostics and usage statistics
We use Google Firebase:
- Analytics sends usage events such as “a book was opened”, “a highlight was created” or “a reading session lasted 20 minutes”, with an internal book identifier, the file format and timings.
- Crashlytics sends crash reports: device model, iOS version and the state of the app when it crashed.
These events don’t include book titles, book text, highlights or notes. We use them to find bugs and understand which features help readers. Google processes this data for us under its data processing terms.
7. Legal bases (EEA and UK readers)
We process your data for the following reasons:
- to provide the app and sync you asked for (performance of a contract);
- to keep it working and fix bugs (legitimate interests);
- to meet legal obligations, such as tax records of purchases.
8. Your rights
You can:
- access, correct, export or delete your data;
- object to or restrict processing;
- complain to your data protection authority.
Export. Use the export options in Settings → Data.
Delete. Delete your account in the app. Uninstalling AVIDR removes the data stored only on your device.
Anything else: write to support@avidr.app. We answer within 30 days.
9. Children
AVIDR is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we don’t knowingly collect their personal data.
10. Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we’ll say so in the app before the change takes effect. The current version is always at https://avidr.app/privacy.
